Walter Veith - The Book Of Hebrews:

Substance & Shadow - Introduction

The book of Hebrews is a book about the centrality of Christ. The Jewish economy, feasts and rituals served as types and shadows of the plan of salvation as it is encapsulated in Christ, the substance of all their shadows. The book of Hebrews links the Old and the New Testaments into a harmonious whole and serves as a road map of the plan of salvation and if heeded would guard against the many pitfalls that encumber the proclamation of the Gospel for our time.

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 1:

 The Supremacy Of God's Son

Hebrews chapter one reveals Christ as the Creator, the Saviour, the Ruler and the eternal God. This revelation is essential to the understanding of the gospel of salvation and the mediatorial role of Jesus Christ. Only the One who created and had life within Himself could lay it down and take it up again. Only the One who created all things perfectly could restore all things back to their original perfection.

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 2:

Perfect Through Suffering

In chapter 2 the grand theme of salvation is addressed. Salvation is much to be desired but its requirements cut across the natural inclinations of the heart. In order for salvation to be efficacious, it seeks the surrender of the heart but the natural heart twists and turns to evade its claims. In this chapter Paul addresses this important subject and lays the foundation upon which this theme is to unfold.

Walter Veith - The Book Of Hebrews:

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 3:

Greater Than Moses

Chapter 3 contrast Moses and Christ. Moses was faithful in all his house but he was but a shadow of the substance which is Christ. The law of Moses is a light that must lead us to a greater light but if we fail to embrace the greater light we will be forced to wander in a spiritual wilderness as did the Israelites who could not enter into His rest.

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 4:

The Gospel Of Rest

In chapter 4 we discuss the promise of rest. Entering into the rest of God is the ultimate reward for the believer and signifies salvation by faith in the atoning work of our Saviour Jesus Christ while demonstrating this faith by the fruits of good works. Let us strive to enter into this rest.

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 5:

The Author Of Eternal Salvation

In chapter five we discuss the eternal priesthood of Christ, the captain of our salvation. We hear the echoes of Gethsemane rolling down the stream of time reminding and inviting a broken world to accept the perfect sacrifice that alone can heal our mortal wounds.

Walter Veith - The Book Of Hebrews:

 Substance & Shadow - Chapter 6:

Falling Away

In Chapter 6 Paul warns about the consequences of falling away. How should we understand these admonishments and how do we reconcile them with the mercy of God? Faith, hope and love are the three great attributes that will guide us safely into the eternal harbour.

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 7:

The Priesthood of Christ

The theme of chapter 7 is Christ the King and Priest of the order of Melchizedek. The unique King and the unique Priest combined in one whereas in the earthly priesthood the office of king and priest were always separate. When we bow the knee to Christ we do so in both the civil and the spiritual realm.

Walter Veith - The Book Of Hebrews:

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 8:

A Better Covenant
In Chapter 8 Paul explains the superiority of the new covenant over the old. Chapter 7 dealt with superior priesthood of Christ over that of the Levitical priesthood, but this superior priesthood also requires a superior covenant. In what way is this new covenant superior? This is the theme of chapter 8.

Walter Veith - The Book Of Hebrews:

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 9:

Worldly And Heavenly

In chapter 9 Paul contrasts the earthly sanctuary with the heavenly and continues with his theme of substance and shadow. Understanding the earthly provides the key to the heavenly and opens the door to the unravelling of the mystery of salvation.

Walter Veith - The Book Of Hebrews:

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 10:

Once for All

In this chapter the grand theme of the great sacrifice, the once for all sacrifice, is unfolded. This greatest of all sacrifices opened the way to the new and living way to boldly step into the presence of God. Saved by the blood of the Lamb; this is the theme that will occupy the minds of the redeemed for all eternity.

Walter Veith - The Book Of Hebrews:

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 11:

Gallery Of Faith

In this chapter we step into the hall of fame where hang the portraits of those who have conquered by faith. The fact that these portraits hang there in the first place is of great encouragement to us on who the end of the world has come. Knowing how these champions of faith struggled against their human weaknesses should give us hope that we too may be overcomers in Christ.

Walter Veith - The Book Of Hebrews:

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 12:

 Author And Finisher

Jesus is the author and the finisher of our faith. We are so inclined to look at the unfinished product and to condemn its flaws but the great molder and shaper of our characters will bring forth a useful vessel if we permit the refiner to do His work. “Those that I love, I rebuke and discipline.”

Walter Veith - The Book Of Hebrews:

Substance & Shadow - Chapter 13:

 Brotherly Love

In chapter 13 Paul looks at our horizontal relationships. These relationships should naturally flow out of our vertical relationship but, as someone once said, “Christ is easy to love once we understand the plan of salvation but the brethren, that is often a different matter.” The love of God towards all of humanity should be our incentive to also love the brethren and also those that are not yet part of the household of God.
